Machteld Hali
As a small child, growing up in Ujung Pandang, Sulawesi, Hali was mesmerised by the magic of potato printing, resulting in multiple images from an innocent half potato, which fascination became an obsession with printmaking at the first print of a reduction woodcut printed at a course in Woodblock Printing at The Amsterdam University on her travels in 1990. Thus, she enjoys a multicultural identity encompassing an exotic and unusual experiences, inspiring and at the same time challenging, however rich in imagery.
Hali finds her roots in the natural world, flora and fauna, and is fascinated by, ‘the force that through the green fuse drives the flower’(Dylan Thomas) : the dandelions that grow out of concrete rubble left by war, the lotus flower that grows out of the mud and blossoms above the muddy water surface not tainted by the mud. That which lies beneath our feet, easily ignored yet full of meaning and power.
The prints are all viscosity printed collagraphs, a very seductive yet complex process, in that it combines intaglio with relief printing and a certain chemistry with the inks, thus offering exciting spontaneous results.
Hali enjoys a multicultural background, born in Holland, brought up in Indonesia and now living in Australia. She has won many prizes, exhibits and sells her work widely, here and overseas. Hali graduated from COFA with an MA majoring in Printmaking. She is also passionate about teaching her art, and is of the belief that all people are basically creative, ready to find their creativity.
